The Discovery Trail: An 8.5-Mile Journey Through History
One of my favorite things about SeaQueen's location is how close we are to the Discovery Trail. This 8.5-mile paved path commemorates the Lewis and Clark expedition, and it's absolutely worth exploring during your stay.
What Makes It Special
The trail runs from Ilwaco to Leadbetter Point, following the route Lewis and Clark took in 1805-1806. Along the way, you'll find interpretive signs, bronze sculptures, and incredible coastal views.
Perfect for All Activity Levels
- Casual walkers: Do a 1-2 mile section
- Serious hikers: Tackle the whole 8.5 miles
- Cyclists: The paved path is perfect for bikes
- Dog owners: Leashed dogs are welcome
Starting from SeaQueen
The closest access point is about a mile from the house. I recommend:
- Walk or drive to the trailhead
- Head north toward Cranberry Museum section (about 2 miles round trip)
- Stop at the viewing platform overlooking the wetlands
- Return for a hot tub session!
Best Times to Go
- Morning: Quietest time, best for wildlife spotting
- Sunset: The trail faces west – incredible photo ops
- After rain: The marshlands are most vibrant
What to Bring
- Water (even though it's paved, 8.5 miles is long!)
- Camera
- Binoculars (for bird watching)
- Layers (coastal weather changes fast)
The trail is also perfect for biking – there are several bike rental shops in town if you didn't bring your own. Just another reason SeaQueen's location is unbeatable!
