Razor Clamming Season is Here! Everything You Need to Know
The text alerts went out this week – razor clam season is OPEN! If you've never experienced this uniquely Pacific Northwest activity, you're in for a treat. And if you're staying at SeaQueen, you're perfectly positioned to join the fun.
What is Razor Clamming?
Razor clamming is a beloved tradition where you head out to the beach at low tide (often very early morning or late evening) and dig for Pacific razor clams. These delicious clams are worth the early wake-up call, trust me.
Getting Started
Great news for SeaQueen guests - we provide clamming nets/guns at the house, so no need to rent!
You'll need:
- Washington State shellfish license (buy online at WDFW or at local shops)
- Bucket or mesh bag
- Headlamp (if going at night)
- Waterproof boots
- Warm waterproof layers
The limit is 15 clams per person, and you must keep the first 15 you dig (even broken ones). Check WDFW's razor clam page for current season dates and regulations.
Best Spots Near SeaQueen
The beach access closest to SeaQueen is just a 5-minute walk. Head north from the access point – that's where we've had the best luck. Look for "dimples" or "shows" in the sand during low tide.
Back at the House
The modern kitchen has everything you need to clean and cook your catch. Pro tip: Our guests love making clam chowder in the cast iron Dutch oven.
Season runs through April, so you've got plenty of time to plan a clamming adventure!
